Summer Fun in Prince Edward County

Untitled photo

Most folks contacting me through Google, Instagram or my website aren’t seeking out travel tips or recommended activities, they are reaching out because they are looking for a wedding photographer in Prince Edward County or are in need of someone to snap some shots of an engagement, a family portrait session and the like. That being said, I have been noticing that my clients are often not from PEC and are looking to enjoy all that The County has to offer when they are in town.

Each season brings with it a bunch of things to do here, but summer months remain the most popular by far for tourists. Sandbanks is the obvious beach and camping destination for most when they think about what to see and do in Prince Edward County, but if that’s all you’re here for, you’re missing out!

Here are a few of my favourite spots and activities in the summer months. Since I have children of my own now, these recommendations are kid-friendly, but are by no means exclusive to family enjoyment. A bachelorette weekend, couples getaway, or a solo bike-packing adventure are all reasons enough to try out some of these activities.

Berry picking

I have fond memories of picking berries as a kid. For me, it’s synonymous with summer in Ontario. Whether it’s strawberries, raspberries or blueberries, berry picking is one of those things that oozes nostalgia. While pick-your-own berries are not necessarily a whole lot more economical these days, most places build snacking into what they charge, as it’s not worth the hassle to police the pickers. Each berry has a window for prime picking, so it’s important that you stay up-to-date with when picking is best.

For raspberry picking, try The Campbell’s Orchard in Rednersville. Pro-tip: Earlier in the summer, they may be closed for picking Monday and Tuesday, so Wednesday is a very fruitful day as the bushes have had a chance to recover after the weekend rush. For blueberries, try The Blueberry Patch up Highway 8. We went for the first time this year and filled our baskets in no time at all.

Wine tasting

Within the last couple of decades, Prince Edward County has managed to cement itself as a major player in the wine making game. While many vineyards serve as beautiful wedding venues in PEC, it’s the wine that comes first. Located at an ideal latitude for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes, The County boasts some fantastic whites and reds. Staff are knowledgeable at the wineries and the rural backdrop makes a perfect setting to kick back in the afternoon sun with friends, a romantic partner and yes, even with kids. While they wouldn’t partake in the sipping, many wineries have children in mind as they make lawn games available or have animals on site to check out. At most wineries, like Waupoos Estate Winery, there is plenty of space for kids to run around.

Wellington Beach

Sandbanks and North Beach are the hotspots for sure, but Wellington Beach is a no frills option. While there is also a fee to get onto the beach, it’s generally far less busy and allows for you to head into town to grab picnic items or sit down for lunch at a restaurant (I see you Drake Devonshire!). While the beach is mostly rocky, it's sandy once you step into the water. There is also a coffee truck and food truck on site that give off California vibes.

Breweries and Distilleries

Wine not your thing? There are fantastic craft breweries and distilleries to whet your palette, too. For me, Parsons is the pinnacle of brewery space. It’s massive patio, scattered picnic tables, lawn games in the summer and skating rink in the winter are Insta-worthy. If there were a benchmark for family-friendly brewery spaces, it’s this place.

As for distilleries, there are a few - but Kinsip seems to have an edge at the moment in terms of something for everyone. Kids will be thrilled with funky chickens and a peacock running around, as well as the classic long-roped wooden swing. There’s a food truck on site, but they also have charcuterie boxes. You won’t be disappointed with their spirits and cocktails.

Lavender fields

I bet you didn’t know that you can find rows upon rows of lavender fields in Prince Edward County! Fool yourself into thinking you’re in the south of France by stopping in at Prince Edward County Lavender. Their snack-sized lavender ice cream is a perfect treat as you get those photos for the 'Gram. Lots of room for kids to run around, too.

The activities are endless and there are so many places to explore. There’s more than just a sandy bank over here (though, it’s pretty special too, who am I kidding).
